Xabi Alonso has reportedly made signing Lamine Camara his priority for Chelsea in the transfer window.

Liverpool are also thought to be admirers of the Senegalese international, but separate reports indicate they are prioritising a move for Roma’s Manu Kone.

However, Foot Mercato’s editor-in-chief, Sebastien Denis, hinted the Reds may yet make a move for the Monaco midfielder.

Reports around the player have suggested that Liverpool would actually be the midfielder’s preferred choice of destination this summer.

However, Chelsea’s potentially impending need for a replacement for Manchester City-linked Enzo Fernandez could see the Blues jump into action far sooner than their Premier League rivals.

At any rate, the Reds themselves are thought to be prioritising moves to reinforce their forward line ahead of the deadline on September 1.

And it remains to be seen whether there are spare funds in place to sign a midfielder beyond the club’s planned targets.

Liverpool find themselves in an awkward position with four days to go before the window slams shut.

Yes, they’ve managed to bring down Bradley Barcola’s £145m asking price to a more reasonable £100m (not including £20m in add-ons).

But there is now a growing expectation that they’ll be forced to overpay if they want to fully bolster the forward line in the window.

Bids for Yankuba Minteh (£50m and £60m) and Ismaila Sarr (£50m) have been firmly rebuffed by Brighton and Crystal Palace, with the former pushing for £80m to release their Gambian international.

If we accept we’ll have to be more flexible with our budget to get a right winger over the line, there’s every possibility it could compromise our ability to secure a midfielder this summer.

Unless we’re expecting a potential sale of Cody Gakpo to leave us with more wiggle room at the end of the window.
